Scouting at Sardis got its start in 1941 when Joe Hutchison organized a group of boys from the rural Sardis community into Boy Scouts of America Troop #33. In the early years the troop remained small and met in the now demolished Miller Sunday School building and then a wooden scout hut that sat in the vicinity of the EducationBuilding. In 1966 the Mike Thomasson Memorial Scout lodge was built on the opposite side of the road. This gift from the Thomasson family was timely because of the growing population of boys due to the development of Lansdowne, Stonehaven and other areas in the Sardis community. By then Sardis had a Cub Scout program as well and afterwards a second Boy Scout program would be added at Sardis.
There are over 200 boys from grades 1-12 and 125 adult volunteers are currently involved in scouting at Sardis. Over 200 boys have attained the rank of Eagle Scout since 1941. These packs and troops are self-supporting and are actively involved in camping, leadership training and community service. Many devoted men and women volunteer in leadership positions. In addition to the scout lodge, the church provides meeting space in the education and fellowship buildings, the fellowship hall, and sanctuary for awards ceremonies and the bus and van for transportation to monthly camping trips. Scouting and Sardis Church have proven to be a great team since 1941.
