Last year our special series on Islam was well received, and the Christian Education Ministry Team wants to continue to provide special opportunities for adults to come together to explore important issues facing Christians of all ages today.

Dr. Jonathan Berkey
Davidson College

 

Professor Berkey teaches the full range of Middle Eastern history since the rise of Islam, and in addition participates in Davidson's Humanities Program. His research and writing focus on Islamic religious culture and medieval Egypt and Syria. He is the author of The Transmission of Knowledge in Medieval Cairo: A Social History of Islamic Education (Princeton University Press, 1992), and Popular Preaching and Religious Authority in the Medieval Islamic Near East (University of Washington Press, 2001).

 

Dr. Berkey’s most recent book, The Formation of Islam: Religion and Society in the Near East, 600–1800 (Cambridge University Press, 2003), received the top annual book prize from the Middle East Studies Association (MESA).

Sardis welcomes Dr. Fuji Lozada, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Director of Asian Studies at Davidson College.  Prior to coming to Davidson College, he taught anthropology for three years at Butler University in Indianapolis, and before that at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.  Dr. Lozada has recently returned from a trip to China and will share his experiences and the importance to the world of the religion and politics of China.

We are excited about the opportunity to bring these outstanding speakers to Sardis – Mark your calendars to join us for these special classes – all will be held in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School hour (9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.).

This class seeks to live faithful lives while balancing career, older children and/or aging parents.  The class is led by team leaders and guest speakers with short-term topics suggested by the class.  Ages 30 & up. 


Crossroads

This class dives deeper into the Bible with lecture and discussion.  Ages 30 & up.


Discussing Bible, Books & Topics
Room 219

This is a roundtable forum class combining Bible Study and a discussion of issues related to our Christian faith and witness. Ages 30 & up.


Men's Bible Class

This class studies topics of interest to men with a lecture/discussion format.  Some guest speakers are used.  Ages 40 & up.

This long-standing class maintains its original high standards of Bible study, while enjoying fellowship and hymn singing, and offering support to its members.  This class uses the Presbyterian curriculum, The Present Word in a lecture format.  Ages 55 & up.

 

Neat Young Christians (NYC)

This class for young single and married adults explores various aspects of living out our faith.  Most class discussions are led by Rev. Chris Herrin with the assistance of class leaders.  Ages 20's & 30's.

New Members & New Joiners

The New Members Class is an introduction to the life of faith as a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church.  New classes are convened in September, November, January, March, and May.

The New Joiners Class is available two to three times a year and consists of three sessions with Dr. Kort.  Classes focus on the relational aspects of our faith and spirituality with one another.  All ages.

This class follows a discussion/lecture format on issues and/or Biblical studies for 6 to 12 weeks.  An emphasis on service to others makes this class unique.  Ages 30 & up.

Women's Bible Class
